Permission to land: nature centre among Heathrow's flights
A BIRD-watching hideaway in the heart of one of Heathrow’s 13 nature conservation sites was unveiled this week. The one-of-a-kind bird hide, designed to resemble the airport’s control tower, is free to visit as part of a bookable tour of the area. It serves as a camouflaged look-out, allowing visitors to watch a range of bird species ‘coming into land’, along with other wildlife. The Nature Traffic Control Tower is designed to raise awareness of Heathrow’s Nature Positive Plan, detailing how the airport will better understand and, where possible, reduce its environmental impacts. The new bird-watching experience follows an upsurge in the hobby, with #birdwatching generating more than two billion views on TikTok in recent years. Celebrity plan spotter Jerry Dyer (Big Jet TV) was invited to test out the Nature Traffic Control Tower and streamed his experience to followers on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94L-44J4aY8. The tower is at the Causeway Nature Reserve at Cranford, where visitors can book a free bird-watching session and guided nature tour with one of Heathrow’s expert ecologists. The tour around the biodiversity site will take nature enthusiasts through diverse habitats, including freshwater lakes, reedbeds, grasslands and woodlands. The River Crane, which flows alongside the reserve, is home to fish species such as the European eel and boasts some of the borough’s oldest woodland along its banks. Nearby, the Princes Lakes biodiversity site is also home to the rare Nathusius Pipistrelle bat, hundreds of moth species, 90 species of bee and serves as a winter hub for the diving smew Jerry Dyer (aka Big Jet TV), said: “It’s an ingenious idea that brings together two of my favourite Heathrow’s Nature Traffic Control Tower is now open for free bookings via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/heathrow-nature-tour-tickets-1341655781559
