Shock Olympic exit leaves GB boxer Davison pondering future
Charley Davison admits her future in the ring is uncertain after a shock Olympic exit in the last-16.
The Lowestoft flyweight boxer was beaten on points by China’s Chang Yuan, becoming the third British fighter to bow out of the Games.
Mum-of-three Davison returned to the ring in 2019 after seven years away and was seen as a strong medal contender.
An early exit here has left her with a decision to make but for now she can’t wait to get back to kids Arnell, Armani and Amir.

When asked if she will continue boxing, she said: “We’ll see, I have three kids at home so I don’t know what is going to happen now. We will decide once we go home.
“I came here for a medal, not to make up the numbers. I have gained all the experience I need for the future and I just can’t wait to get home now and see the kids, now that it’s done.”
In Olympic boxing, a fast start is essential and Davison – who walked to the ring at just before 8pm local time – was caught cold by Yuan.
Davison is taller than the Chinese fighter but was outmanoeuvred in the first round, with all five judges scoring it in Yuan’s favour 10-9.
Davison’s tactics changed as she tried to force her way back into the fight, stepping forward and controlling the middle of the ring, but Yuan sat back and countered well, with four judges awarding her the round.

Davison came out swinging in the last round in a desperate bid to snatch victory but Yuan drained the clock and progressed to the last eight.
“I think the nerves got to me a little bit. I did not box to my ability, nowhere near and I think I was way off where I was in the first fight, it was a different opponent obviously,” said Davison.
“It is just one of those things, it’s done now. You panic, you have to win that first round or you have to catch up.
“I think everything just got to me and I didn’t box how I would normally do, I should have got behind my jabs and taken my time but I didn’t, I got flustered and got beat.”
