Firefighters were called to Marlow after reports that a pony had become stuck in a four-foot-deep trench.

Crews from High Wycombe, Wokingham and Caversham, alongside a Heavy Rescue Unit from Theale, were called to Finnamore Lane at 7:35am on Tuesday, April 23.

According to Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services, the crews found Basil the pony trapped in a four-foot-deep trench upon their arrival.

Working with a vet and Basil's owner, the firefighters sedated the pony and used hand tools to create space around him in the trench.

They then used strops and a crane from the Heavy Rescue Unit to lift him up to safety, before leaving him in the care of the vet and his owner.

Sharing an update after the rescue operation, Basil's owner said he has "responded well to medication, has started eating and remains stable".

Adding: "I can't thank the fire service enough for their expertise, professionalism and empathy."

The last time Bucks Fire and Rescue intervened to help release a trapped animal in Marlow was in September 2023 when a crew from Wycombe used a small gear to disentangle a deer from cricket netting on Henley Road.
