Paralympic shooter Lorraine Lambert cut a frustrated figure after she crashed out of her main event in Tokyo.

The Portsmouth ace finished 15th in the R8 women’s 50m rifle 3 positions qualification, two places lower than fellow Brit Lesley Stewart, after scoring 1121 points.

Both shooters were consistent as they moved through the three positions of kneeling, prone and standing, neither shooting below 90 on each round.

However, with eight moving through to the final it was not good enough and Lambert admits she was far from her best.

“The performance really does not reflect where I have been in training so I am frustrated that I was not able to be in contention for the final,” she said.

“I had a difficult start in the kneeling but pushed through and finished strongly in the standing element so I'm proud that I continued to fight.

“However I have another opportunity to compete in the 50m prone event on Sunday and I am now going to put this behind me and focus fully on that event.”

Elsewhere, Eastleigh boccia star David Smith is turning his attentions to the next Paralympics in Paris after bowing out of the team competition.

Smith, who won gold in the BC1 individual competition on Wednesday, is on the plane home after he and teammates Will Hipwell and Claire Taggart lost to Russia in their final pool game and failed to make the knock-out stage.

“The positives are that we came here with no expectations and we’ve worked together,” he said.

“It’s been great. Individuals and team, we’ve done pretty well. We’re happy with what we got.

“But we move onto the next cycle, with a lot of development still ongoing. We are looking forward to Paris, we know we have got a lot to do but we feel like we are making massive progress.

“We were outside the top 13 less than two years ago. Now we are in the top eight and are steadily improving all the time. We made strides over the pandemic so when the pandemic hopefully eases, we can keep pushing and I’m pretty confident we can be challenging even further in Paris.”
