Thames Valley Police have been referred to Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after a crash on the M4 resulted in the death of a man in his sixties.

A statement from Thames Valley Police reads as follows: “A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in relation to this case.

“This referral is a standard requirement to ensure independent oversight, and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further until the IOPC has completed their assessment.”

Police were called at 11.37pm on Monday, June 1, to reports of a collision between a white VW Golf and a black BMW 320i.

 A 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 62-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, while the 29-year-old man also taken to hospital was deemed not to be life-threatening or life-changing.

It is understood that the black BMW 320i, had been pursued by officers from Thames Valley Police prior to the collision on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. They were not in pursuit at the time of the collision.

The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot and police are currently searching for him.
