A new town crier has been appointed to take up one of the area’s 'most cherished' ceremonial roles.

Janet Barr has been chosen to represent Chesham as town crier, bringing her "commanding voice" and decades of public service experience to the historic post.

Ms Barr spent 30 years with the Metropolitan Police, retiring at the rank of detective inspector.

She said: "It is a great honour to be appointed as Town Crier for Chesham.

"I look forward to serving the community, supporting local events and helping to celebrate everything that makes our town such a special place."

In her new role, Ms Barr will make formal announcements, support civic events and represent the town at official functions, all while dressed in traditional regalia and carrying the distinctive bell and scroll.

Chesham Mayor Parveiz Aslam MBE said: "We are thrilled to appoint Janet as our new Town Crier.

"This role is an important part of our town’s heritage and traditions, and we are confident that Janet will represent our community with enthusiasm, dignity and a strong sense of civic pride."

Ms Barr’s first official engagement will take place at the Hats Off event on July 11.
