THE life and legacy of acclaimed musician, lyricist and co-founder of the iconic band Traffic, Jim Capaldi, has been permanently commemorated with the unveiling of a new heritage plaque in Marlow.

The plaque was unveiled on 2 August by Aninha Capaldi, Jim’s wife, on what would have been his 82nd birthday. The ceremony also marked 21 years since his passing, bringing together family, friends and members of the local community to celebrate the remarkable contribution of one of Britain’s most influential songwriters.

Among those attending the unveiling were the Mayor of Marlow, Councillor Jenny Simnett, Jim’s longtime friend and fellow Traffic founding member Steve Winwood, his brother Muff Winwood, and acclaimed actor Steven Berkoff, and iconic BBC Radio DJ Bob Harris, alongside other friends, family, representatives of the Marlow Society and local residents.

Jim Capaldi made Marlow his home for many years and became one of the town’s most celebrated creative figures. As the lyricist and drummer for Traffic, he helped shape some of the defining music of the late 1960s and 1970s, co-writing enduring classics including The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, Light Up or Leave Me Alone, and Dear Mr Fantasy. Beyond Traffic, Capaldi enjoyed a successful solo career and collaborated with many of the world’s leading musicians, earning a lasting reputation as one of Britain’s finest lyricists.

The new plaque has been installed as part of the Marlow Society heritage plaque programme, which recognises notable people who have lived in or made a significant contribution to the town. Jim Capaldi now joins a distinguished group of creative, cultural and historic figures whose stories continue to enrich Marlow’s heritage.

Speaking at the unveiling, Aninha Capaldi said: “Jim chose this house in 1971 to make Marlow his home. I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this plaque a reality, ensuring his music, his passion, and his contribution to Marlow’s cultural heritage will inspire generations to come.”

Cllr Jenny Simnett, Mayor of Marlow welcomed the addition of the plaque saying “It is a fitting tribute to a musician whose influence extended far beyond the town while remaining deeply rooted in the community he called home.”

Geoff Wood, from the Marlow Society, said “The plaque celebrates not only Jim Capaldi’s extraordinary achievements as a songwriter and performer, but also his place in Marlow’s rich history. By recognising figures such as Capaldi, the Society hopes to inspire residents and visitors alike to discover the remarkable people who have shaped the town through the centuries.”
