The NHS is backing a campaign to help people take control of their heart health.

In support of National Cholesterol Month, the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West (BOB) NHS is raising awareness of the importance of cholesterol management and encouraging people to make positive changes.

The campaign, led by the charity Heart UK, carries the theme #BeTheBossOfYourCholesterol.

Dr Heike Veldtman, GP and clinical lead for cardiovascular disease prevention at NHS BOB, said: "There are a few easy things everyone can do to check their heart health.

"You can ask your GP practice nurse for a cholesterol test if you haven’t had one in the past year.

"Attend your NHS Health Check if you get an invite.

"This is especially important if you are overweight, a smoker or if a close relative has had a heart attack or stroke."

Cholesterol has no symptoms but raises the risk of heart attack and stroke by contributing to plaque build-up in the arteries.

Dr Veldtman said that while some people may need medication, many can lower their cholesterol through lifestyle changes.

She said: "Every step towards healthier living helps."
