The incident happened near Hillingdon.

"Our specialist detectives are now working at pace to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and locate the driver of the second car.

"He is described as an Asian man of heavy build, wearing dark clothing and carrying a black rucksack.

"We urge anyone with information to urgently contact the police - particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage."

It is understood that the second car, a black BMW 320i, had been pursued by officers from Thames Valley Police prior to the collision on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. They were not in pursuit at the time of the collision.

The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot and police are currently searching for him.

Specialist officers are supporting the next of kin of those involved in the collision.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

“We were called at 11:40pm yesterday (Monday 1 June) to reports of a road traffic collision on the M4 near Heathrow Airport.

“We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART), a paramedic from our tactical response unit and an advanced paramedic. We also dispatched trauma teams in cars from London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated three patients at the scene. Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, one of the patients died. The two other patients were taken to a major trauma centre.”

The Metropolitan Police have appealed to the public for help in tracing the driver and gathering information about the collision.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
