Associated with the main Nostalgia article detailing the history of the UK Prime Minister’s official country retreat, we show here more pictures of a world leader who visited Chequers.

This was a particularly memorable event for local people, being the visit in 1959 of United States President Dwight D Eisenhower, who served as the 34th President from 1953 to 1961. He had been a soldier and became a hero in this country. During World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. He was responsible for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in 1942–43 and the successful invasion of Normandy in 1944–45.

During his visit to Chequers for discussions with Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in August 1959 he took time off to attend a Sunday service at the nearby Ellesborough parish church. This gave local residents a wonderful opportunity to see him close-up, an event which was captured by Bucks Free Press photographer Ronald Goodearl, who himself had served in the RAF during the war.
