Fears have been raised that plans to build a new cafe and toilets at a popular High Wycombe park will not go ahead - after a council report claimed the project set up to look into the feasibility of the idea was “closed”.

A newly developed café by the children’s playground on The Rye, including toilets, resurfacing work and construction of new pedestrian crossings on busy main roads, was one of 15 projects given the go-ahead by Wycombe District Council’s cabinet in March 2016.

However, a report to the last High Wycombe town committee meeting claimed that the £25,000 feasibility study which would look into the possibility of the idea was carried out in 2016 - but that the project was now closed.

Cllr Lesley Clarke OBE said: “I thought this committee wanted it to happen? Who closed it and why?

“I don’t think anyone was aware that this project was stopped and we would like to know who stopped it.

“We were going to put something on The Rye and we had a very long meeting where we said what we thought was nice and what we didn’t think was nice.”

Cllr Ray Farmer said he believed that the project had not been completely closed - but changes had been made to the plan and it would not be put forward until next year.

He said: “I think it will still be going ahead but not until 2019. I think instead of a new building it will be a rebuild of the boat house which will include toilets. I think the project is still there.”

The original cafe and toilets plan was due to be put in place last year - but had already been delayed.

John Callaghan, team leader for infrastructure at the district council, said he would ask colleagues for an update on the project and report back.
