Following Wycombe's two defeats against Norwich and Watford in this past week, Wanderers fan Jamie Cameron opens up on the Chairboys season.

The last two games have once again shown Wanderers fans the harsh reality of life in the Championship, coming up against a pair of sides who were in the Premier League last season.

Both Norwich and Watford have several international players in their ranks and both proved too good for Wycombe, although it could be said that the Chairboys didn’t help themselves with their approach to the games.

Gareth Ainsworth is often in awe of opposing clubs, and when taking on these teams at the top of the league, Wanderers have arguably sat back too much and not played the flowing football which has produced their best performances in recent times.

Against Watford, Andre Gray’s brace was an indication of the quality at this level.

The Hornets weren’t at their best, but Gray, after a disappointing season on the whole, was at his best, playing on the shoulder of the defender, and took his goals expertly.

Chances for Wanderers were few and far between in both games, and as a result, the team never really looked like getting anything from either, leaving them 12 points from safety with 13 games to play.

To reach 50 points now, Wycombe would need to average more than two points a game, which only Norwich have done in the campaign so far.

I think it’s fair to say even the most optimistic Chairboys fan, and you could include defiant chairman Rob Couhig in that, may have to accept that the club’s first season in the Championship is going to end in relegation.

However, as mentioned, there’s still a fair chunk of the season to play and there’s still plenty at stake for Wanderers players.

They won’t want to go down with a whimper on fewer than 30 points, and with games against the likes of Rotherham, Coventry and QPR still to come, there are still opportunities for more wins.

There is also the issue of player contracts. Ryan Allsop, despite an excellent season, and Curtis Thompson are among the names out of contract in June.

With the possibility of generals Adebayo Akinfenwa and Darius Charles leaving the club in the summer leading to a period of transition, the players with three months left on their deals as well as those on loan will want to prove themselves before then.

The likes of Daryl Horgan and Garath McCleary have shown plenty of promise throughout their time at Adams Park, but without too much end product, so there’s also an incentive for players like that to end the campaign with respectable tallies in the goals and assists columns.

The Chairboys travel to Stoke then QPR next, two sides who were beaten in midweek, so hopefully the team will go into those games with a more positive mindset.
