Chesham Town Council has said it remains “entirely committed” and supportive of the Elgiva theatre after online speculation.

In a statement, the authority said it was aware of “recent social media speculation” about the future of the theatre, adding that it had recently agreed a new investment in the current building.

“First and foremost, the Town Council is entirely committed to, and supportive of, the Elgiva,” the statement read.

“Far from seeking to diminish the theatre, the council has recently agreed on a major £130,000 investment into the current building for a brand-new heating and air conditioning system.

“We have also commissioned an advanced drone survey of the roof to thoroughly assess and protect its structural condition. A capital investment of this scale demonstrates our clear dedication to the facility.

“While we welcome public passion for our town’s cultural assets, much of the recent rumour and speculation is not accurate or helpful.”

The town council told residents to discuss the situation with their town councillors if they wanted to know “the facts”.

It also addressed rumours of a relocation, adding: “As part of our long-term goal to protect public services and drive high street regeneration, the council is exploring early-stage strategic options.

“One such option does include the potential for a modern, shared central space in the town centre that could bring the Elgiva and the Town Hall together under one roof to boost footfall.

“Because these long-term exploratory options involve complex, commercially sensitive negotiations, certain initial debates must legally be held in private to protect the financial interests of the taxpayer.

“However, the Town Council conducts its business in its public meetings and on the public record. Absolutely no final decisions have been made, and any significant changes would naturally be brought to residents for consultation.”

The council concluded its statement by saying the Elgiva remained one of Chesham’s most cherished assets and that its focus was firmly fixed on investing in its immediate presentation while responsibly planning for its long-term future.
