A company director from Lithuania died in his Cookham hotel room after taking drugs while on a business trip, a coroner has ruled.

Mindaugas Jakutis had been staying at the Chartered Institute of Marketing business centre in the village for work, an inquest heard.

The 43-year-old was found dead by police on the floor of his ensuite bathroom. Alcohol and a drug was found in his system, the coroner recorded.

The inquest documents record Mr Jakutis’s body was identified by his business partner and friend Luke Dejahang.

Katy Thorne KC, assistant coroner for Berkshire, said Mr Jakutis normally lived in Lithuania with his wife Lina - a deputy director - and their family in their home by the sea in Palanga, the largest summer resort in the country.

Mr Jakutis travelled around Europe for work and was working in the UK between September 5 and 14 last year.

“He was last seen by his business partner on Friday, September 6 and last spoken to by a friend and by his wife, the night of Saturday September 7”, the coroner said.

“The last time his room key was used was on September 7.  On September 8 he did not respond to messages or calls from his wife, which was unusual.

“By Monday September 9, following escalating concerns raised by his wife, hotel staff went to his room with no response and entry was gained but the ensuite bathroom door was blocked.

“Police were called and found Mindaugas on the floor of the bathroom. There were no life saving opportunities and no evidence of third party involvement.”

A toxicological report concluded Mr Jakutis had alcohol in his system at around twice the drink driving limit.

The coroner added that there was significant levels of a drug in his system having been ingested some time before death.

She said that Mindaugas’s death was due to the toxic effects of the drug use causing an 'acute cardiac event'.

The coroner concluded Mr Jakutis’s death was drug related.
