A BAFTA-winning film editor is turning to pedal power to help fight poverty overseas.

David Blackmore, 67, from Buckinghamshire, is taking part in the 70K in May challenge to raise funds during Christian Aid Week, Britain’s longest-running fundraising week.

He aims to cycle 70 kilometres in a single day on Friday, May 29, to support the charity’s work.

Mr Blackmore, who has worked on television projects including Wolf Hall and The Undeclared War, said: "Every year, during this appeal, people across Britain and Ireland have seven days to make a difference and raise funds for Christian Aid Week.

"I’m planning to cycle 70k – maybe more – in one day, on Friday, May 29.

"Last year I raised £2,700 and this year I’ve set myself the ambitious target of raising £3,000."

He said cycling is an enjoyable way to contribute to a cause he believes in.

Mr Blackmore said: "I enjoy cycling so 70K in May is a fun and effective way of supporting this year’s campaign.

"I also enjoy growing vegetables and I’m really impressed by the work of Christian Aid’s partner Beacon of Hope, creating wonderfully abundant gardens in the small urban spaces of Nairobi.

"They bring hope to people facing extreme poverty and I want to be part of that story."

This year’s Christian Aid Week, running from May 10 to 16, focuses on supporting families in Nairobi, Kenya, where many struggle to afford daily necessities, including food.

Christian Aid’s partner, Beacon of Hope, helps people grow vegetables in small urban spaces, providing a more reliable source of food and income.

In addition to his cycling challenge, Mr Blackmore is helping to organise a fundraising event at The Manor House in Church Walk, Weston Turville, on Saturday, May 16.

The Weston Turville Christian Aid Group’s annual teatime event will take place from 2.30pm to 5pm.

The event includes a children’s treasure hunt and performances by the Star Flutes Ensemble, the Chiltern Handbell Ringers, and the Weston Turville CE School Pop Choir.

Funds raised will support Christian Aid’s partners in delivering practical, long-term solutions to poverty.

Supporters can donate to Mr Blackmore’s effort via his fundraising page, titled David’s 70k-in-a-day Cycling Challenge – Christian Aid Week.
