In spite of rainy weather last Saturday, Amersham Christmas Festival was a great success, drawing crowds in the thousands.

Running from 10am until 5pm, the event included a children’s funfair, Santa’s Grotto complete with a stilt-walking elf, live music and a festive market with food, gifts and crafts, all on Sycamore Road.

The Christmas Festival, organised by Amersham Town Council and Amersham Action Group,  raised money for a range of worthy causes; Chiltern Toy Bank, Dementia Café 23 and Dementia Carers Respite.

Festivities began when the Mayor and Deputy Mayor opened the event, introduced by town crier Joe Noaman, marking his first outing in the revitalised role.

Chiltern Voice radio broadcast live throughout the event with live music also taking place from 12pm with performances from the Amersham Town Band, the folksy Keelhaulers, Brushed Silk and bands form Dr Challoner’s Grammar School. One highlight was a ‘bonkers’ Zumba performance which got the crowd moving.

The Amersham town Christmas lights were triumphantly illuminated by the cast of the Jack and the Beanstalk, playing at the Elgiva Theatre in Chesham throughout December, who joined together in triggering a ‘detonator’ which lit up the street.

The event was sponsored by a collection of local business partners, and made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers.
