Old Amersham had its annual Christmas lights switch on along with other festivities on December 6.

The Christmas lights were switched on by Dame Cheryl Gillan, former MP for the area, and Laurie Gear, the Michelin star chef of the Artichoke Restaurant.

Children from St Mary’s school sang carols led by Reverend Nigel Wright and accompanied by the Amersham band, around a large Christmas tree which had been decorated by the team at Su Chases Interiors.

The Dr Challoner’s High School choir, the SOLT choir, Amersham Acapella, the Amersham Rock Choir and the Broadside Barbershop Quartet also performed at the event.

There was a skating ring on Market Square which was very popular with attendees as well as a Santa’s Grotto accompanied by reindeer.

The shops were open late for those who wanted to buy a few Christmas gifts.

The event was held to raise funds for charity Scannapeal who use the money to purchase life-saving equipment for Amersham, Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe and Community Hospitals.
