High Wycombe residents were left without power after an incident involving a power cable made a 'really loud' bang.

Fire crews from High Wycombe and Beaconsfield were called to an apparent fault on an overhead electricity cable near Cryers Hill Road at approximately 2.30pm on June 5 , Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

The incident involved an electricity cable, and the scene was later handed over to engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

The fault caused a widespread power outage affecting 1,623 customers in the area.

SSEN said engineers arrived within 15 minutes and began switching homes to alternative circuits while investigating the issue.

By 4pm, power had been restored to all but 31 customers. Engineers continued working into the evening, eventually reconnecting the remaining properties using generators at 11.52pm.

One witness to the incident reported hearing a “really loud bang” resembling a “shotgun” on Friday afternoon.

The witness said they saw “all this smoke coming from the ground” shortly after the noise at around 2.20pm.

“I just thought someone had shot something,” they said.

They added they were worried “somebody was up the pole and got electrocuted.”

In a statement, SSEN said: “Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) was alerted to a fault on an overhead cable near to Cryers Hill Road at 2.30pm on Friday 5 June.

“Engineers were on site within 15 minutes to start switching the 1,623 customers affected to alternate circuits while they worked safely to identify the issue and repair the fault.

“By 4.00pm all but 31 customers had power restored, with engineers working throughout the evening to reconnect those remaining customers via generation at 11.52pm.

“SSEN would like to thank customers for their patience while these works were safely carried out.”
